Meet the Jamul Team Behind Mainspring Garage Door Co.

Our Jamul crew is the same group you’ll see at the hardware store on Campo Road or grabbing breakfast at the Scoopin’ Block. We’re not a rotating cast of subcontractors. When you call Mainspring, you’re getting technicians who know the wind patterns off Lyons Peak, who’ve replaced springs in Steele Canyon and adjusted tracks in Rancho San Diego. What ties us together is simple: we show up when we say, we quote the flat price before touching a tool, and we stand behind the work.

Our People

Carl Dutton, Owner

I started Mainspring in 1984, naming it for the torsion spring that carries every pound of a garage door’s weight. That one part does the heavy lifting, and it’s a decent metaphor for how we try to run this company. After 42 years, I’ve seen every failure mode a door can throw at you: springs that snap during Santa Ana season because the metal fatigues faster in dry heat, openers that struggle with the extra load of an insulated door in a south-facing Jamul driveway. I still take field calls when we’re short-handed, and I write the 90-Day Done Right Promise on every invoice myself. My version of a joke is pointing at a rusted cable and asking the homeowner if they were planning to replace it this decade or the next. Most people laugh. The ones who don’t usually needed it fixed two seasons ago.

Mike R., Lead Technician

Mike joined us in 2017 after eight years running his own small repair shop in El Cajon. He came over because he was tired of chasing parts across three counties and wanted trucks that were actually stocked. He’s factory-certified on LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie opener systems, and he’s the guy we send when a door has a custom weight distribution or a non-standard track layout. Mike lives in Jamul proper, off Honey Springs Road, and he’ll tell you straight if a 20-year-old door is worth repairing or if you’re throwing money at rust. On weekends he restores vintage motorcycles, which explains why he’s patient with finicky mechanical puzzles that would make most technicians walk.

Dolores V., Senior Installer

Dolores has been installing new doors for us since 2012. She started as a helper on a Clopay crew in San Diego and worked her way to lead installer by being the person who actually reads the manual cover to cover. She’s our specialist on Amarr and Wayne Dalton full-view and carriage-house styles, and she’s done more custom wood-overlay installations in Rancho Jamul Estates than anyone else in our network. Dolores is the one who notices if a header isn’t level before the door goes up, not after. She keeps a notebook of every job site quirk, from the low-clearance garage in a Steele Canyon hillside home to the extra-wide RV bay in Rancho San Diego that needed a 20-foot custom track. Her human detail is simple: she talks to the door while she works. Not to us, to the door. We’ve all learned not to interrupt.

James T., Service Coordinator

James is the live voice that answers when you call (619) 333-5822 at 10 PM on a Sunday. He’s been with Mainspring since 2019, and before that he dispatch for a plumbing outfit, so he knows the difference between a true emergency and a situation that can wait until morning without costing you double. James schedules every Jamul call, routes the trucks, and keeps track of which technician has which specialty parts on their shelf that day. He’s the one who will tell you if Mike’s already got your spring size in his truck or if we need to pull it from the San Diego warehouse first. James grew up in Spring Valley, knows the back roads to every Jamul neighborhood, and has a running bet with the field crew about which house on Campo Road will call first after the next big windstorm. He usually wins.

Elena K., Apprentice Technician

Elena started with us in 2023 through a journeyman program we run with a local trade school. She’s already cleared her background check, earned her uniform, and completed factory training on Clopay and Raynor door systems. Under the K.E.Y.S. code, she’s paired with either Mike or Dolores on every job until she can diagnose a spring failure, replace a set of cables, and adjust a safety sensor without supervision. Elena asks more questions than any apprentice we’ve had, which we count as a feature, not a bug. She lives in Jamul with her grandfather, who worked construction in East County for thirty years and still inspects her tool bag every morning. She’s the reason we started keeping metric socket sets on the trucks, and she’s already spotted two installation errors on other companies’ doors that the homeowners hadn’t noticed yet.

One Standard, Every Job

Every technician on this page works under the same rules, whether the job is in Jamul, Rancho San Diego, or Steele Canyon. The 90-Day Done Right Promise applies to everyone: if it’s not right, we come back at no charge, no paperwork fight, no voicemail loop. The flat price is stated before work begins on every single call. Background checks and uniforms are non-negotiable. Trucks stay stocked so most repairs finish in one visit. And a live person answers the phone, every hour of every day, because James doesn’t believe in phone trees and neither do I. We’ve been doing this since 1984. The names on this page change slowly, and the standard doesn’t change at all.
